You have modified this citation since zotero generated it.

Hi,
I am relatively new to Zotero, which I use as stand-alone on a PC, Win 10 with libreoffice 5.4. I get from time to time the following message:

You have modified this citation since zotero generated it. do you want to keep your modifications and prevent future updates? Clicking yes will prevent zotero from updating this citation if you add additional citations, switch styles, or modify the reference to which it refers. Clicking no will erase your changes.

I never know what this actually refers to and would be grateful for explanation. Is the "citation" the part in the text (e.g. (Miller et al., 2017)) or is it the database entry in zotero?

I often have to modify citations in the text as zotero does (as far as I could see) not offer the option of embedding a citation into the text flow (e.g. "Miller et al (2017) found that..." rather than " it was found that... (Miller et al. 2017)). I obviously do not want these modifications be changed in my text. However, in case I notice a mistake in the database and correct it, I obviously want these corrections to be incorporated in the document.

Would be very grateful for some clarifying words.
Thanks in advance.
  • It is part of the text. If you edit the database entry Zotero will update all your citations in the text (after hitting refresh in the add-in or adding a new citation) without prompting, provided the citation Zotero is trying to update has not been modified. You can use the "suppress author" checkbox in the citation editing dialog to get "Miller et al (2017) found that" without modifying the Zotero citation.
  • Thanks that helps! So that is what the surpress authors is for... Ok!! So I should maybe go through my whole document and fix that then to avoid trouble. It would be nice to have the option of inserting a citation fully in the text though, in case there is a mistake with the name it would correct that automatically then too. And such mistakes are not so uncommon as with Asian names it is often not clear what the first and what the last name is. Anyways, just a general suggestion.

    Thanks for the answer.
  • I would definitely recommend going through your document to fix that.

The possibility of adding support for Author (Date) formatted citations is being discussed by the developers of the CSL language (which Zotero uses to format references), but any such changes will not come for some time.
  • Thank you. Good to know indeed. Happy to have learned something useful today.
