Thank you. I have followed your instructions and switched to the beta version. I will give you a feedback in a few days. For now, it seems quite stable.
Ugh! Zotero keeps causing Word to crash still, even with the Beta version. @GLLMPETIT suggested that switching to the 'classic citation catalogue' helped? Any other suggestions?
@oleander71 just to make sure you're affected by the same issue, are you on Word 2013 and working with a large doc (and possibly footnone-based style)?
@adomasven no, I'm working with Word 2016. Yes, it's a large document and there are occasional footnotes but not that many. I've gone back to using the normal (non-beta) version. I switched off the automatic sync function by unlinking the account and that seems to have done the trick. If the issue comes back, I'll be very sad
same issue since updated to zotero 5.0.22. Word 2016 (x32) on Windows 10x64 pro 1703 crashes erratically when adding new citation. Totally breaking my work flow. Here is a report ID: 272550548
Hi @adomasven - moving over my post from a few minutes ago to this forum. I am experiencing the same issue. Have been using 5.0 standalone since it was available and have never had a problem. Currently have 5.0.22. I'm working in Word 2016 with a document that has very few citations (less than 30), no footnotes (currently), and is only about 8 pages long.
Here is the description I put in my original post:
Report Id: 59882963
For the last few days when trying to insert citations into MS Word 2016, Word crashes. This does not happen every time I try to insert a citation - but probably every 5th or 6th time I try to do so.
Steps to reproduce: 1. Open a Word 2016 doc and add/edit a citation (note: I use a hotkey combination to add/edit a citation... Alt+C to add a citation, Alt+V to edit. I don't know if this has anything to do with it). 2. Type in the name of the author(s) you want to cite. Select and hit enter to load them into the citation "toolbar." 3. Hit enter again to insert the citation into Word. --> It is here that the Zotero toolbar fills with green indicating that it is trying to load the citation - and then the Word screen goes blank and I get the green spinning wheel of death. 5. I then get an error saying that Windows has encountered a problem with Word and needs to restart. Sometimes this error is accompanied by another error with the header "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" and text that says "Zotero experienced an error updating your document. The RPC server is unavailable. [setText:field.cpp]"
Word then restarts (hopefully having autosaved my document). Sometimes when I try to insert a citation after restart, it works. And sometimes it crashes again.
Ok, I think I have a fix, but since I cannot reproduce the problem, I need help with testing. You will need to manually replace the word plugin files. Follow these instructions carefully:
1. Open zotero installation folder (default C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero) 2. Navigate to extensions\zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org 3. Download this zip file 4. Remove the contents of the folder you had opened and replace them with the contents from the zip (you will need to navigate to zotero-word-for-windows-integration-fix-2016-crashing within the zip file).
Start Zotero and please report whether you still get the crashing or not.
Quick report - I've inserted several references into the same document I was having trouble with a couple of days ago, and Zotero has not crashed once. Woot! Looks like your fix worked.
Again, thanks for working on this so quickly. I'm up against a deadline, and Word crashing frequently was causing a major issue.
Excellent. Thanks for the report. The fixed version is now available on the Beta channel, you can install this version over your current Zotero install and we'll post in this thread when the fix makes it into the release version.

I just followed your instructions. I'll be using Zotero/Word all day and will report back on whether or not it crashes.
Thanks for working on this!

Haven't had the opportunity to test it thoroughly yet, be so far it seems to do the trick.
Thanks!
