zutilo malfunction: a Firefox legacy problem?

Zutilo stopped functioning. It's still available in the Firefox extensions list though. But in Zotero's context menu's and preferences Zutilo is gone. Shortcuts do not function anymore.

All my extensions (including Zotero) have a 'Legacy' label in Firefox:

Can this malfunction be linked to these (upcoming) updates of Firefox? Zotero and Zotfile are also labeled Legacy, but do function properly

What versions of Firefox and Zotero are you using? In any event, Zotero for Firefox has been deprecated because of the changes from Mozilla that you link to. Zotero 5.0 is now a standalone app only (https://www.zotero.org/blog/a-unified-zotero-experience/). You can install to Zotero 5.0 and install both Zutilo and Zotfile in it, as well as upgrade to the new Firefox connector plugin that uses the new WebExtensions framework: http://zotero.org/download

Thank you. I used Firefox 55.0.3, Zotero 4.0.29.22. I upgraded to Zotero 5.
  • Another question: I seem to have lost the option to directly import pdf's from website to Zotero (inc. automatically retrieving metadata).
  • that option is no longer available from the save dialog becaise of the new Firefox extension system. You can still save pdfs opened in firefox to zotero using the regular "save to zotero" button
  • thank you, I 've found that option (right click). But:
    - several exports of metadata (citations) do not function anymore, which generates obviously a vast amount of workload. I get the message 'importing...' but nothing happens..
Do you have a suggestion for this issue?

  • That's not specific enough. Where are you looking, what are you importing and how?

    for instance:

    http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0043135412001224
The citation export (Export/RIS/Export citation and abstract) does give the box in the lower right corner ("Importing...), but nothing is imported.
From some other publishers it does respond, although it requires more mouse clicks to import.
Also a Dutch site http://library.wur.nl/WebQuery/hydrotheek/2215198 which used to export directly to Zotero does not respond anymore.

In case an import of a RIS to Zotero does result in an import, the rectangle (lower right corner) Importing... does not disappear. Only by restarting Firefox

I found the "Save to Zotero" button.. Since it has no Zotero logo but looks more like Adobe, I did not suspect that one. In the regular dowload option I only get the options "Open with" or "Save file", the old option "Save to Zotero" is gone but not needed anymore
  • This seems obviously a a problem worth fixing, ScienceDirect is a major publisher. So what's happening with this case?
  • but you say yourself that using the "Save to Zotero" button works. That's the recommended way of importing into Zotero, it produces better data quality, and it gives us much better ways to address any issues.

But FWIW, Export from Sciencedirect does work for me into Zotero 5, too.
  • (Though note that you will need both Zotero Standalone _and_ the Zotero connector installed and running for direct export via RIS to work)
  • Importing through Export citation usually also provides an abstract and tags. Save to Zotero and then manually import metadata never does. And those are most relevant for searching in my Zotero database
Besides those two items, what data quality is better in your opinion?
  • ps. I have Zot 5 and Zot connector running
  • No, you're misunderstanding: Click the article icon on http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0043135412001224
not while looking at the PDF.
    See
https://www.zotero.org/support/getting_stuff_into_your_library#web_translators (though there's no longer a Z icon next to the icon)
That will give you abstract, tags, and the attached PDFs. Zotero also fixes known issues in the metadata such as titles and authors in all caps when using that method.
  • mmmh, that actually seems to be perfect. I thought that button was only for importing pdfs. Thank you. Zotero was and is excellent
