For some reason Zotero is not communicating with my Word documents at all. This despite dowloading the latest Zotero version. Any suggestions of what to do? I have used Zotero a few years by now and it had worked fine most of the times.

Which version of Windows? Which version of MS-Word?
Did you install the word processor plugin from Preferences -> Cite −> Word Processors ->Install Microsoft Word Add-in.
(In 5.0, you can access the Preferences from the Edit menu on Windows/Linux or "Zotero" menu on MacOS.
