Zotero, LibreOffice and MacOS - freezing on toolbar use

Hi,

I was hoping to get some help with a problem which is stumping me... Having happily used the above combo for a few years, it has stopped working and nothing I seem to try can help it. When I click on 'add citation' the Zotero toolbar in LibreOffice, it looks like the red dialog box to add a citation is about to come up, but nothing happens. At best I can continue using LibreOffice as if nothing has happened (without a successful citation), at worst LibreOffice just freezes, sometimes with huge CPU usage. Occasionally I can select the citation I want to use but it freezes while trying to add it.

I've tried a few things suggested in these forums - ensuring Zotero standalone is already running before launching LibreOffice, trying JDK, reinstalling software, none of which work.

I'm running MacOS 10.12.1 (Sierra), LibreOffice 5.3.2.2 initially then 'stable' version 5.2.7.2, Zotero standalone 4.0.29.15 and Zotero LibreOffice 3.5.9.

Any suggestions gratefully received! Considering shelling out for Microsoft Word but really don't want to :(
  • I'm afraid that's probably this:

though you could try installing the Zotero beta (see pinned thread at the top of the forum) which has some LibreOffice related fixes.

If you don't want to try the beta, you can download the updated LibreOffice extension, which is compatible with Zotero 4.0 and fixes one of the bugs that was causing the crash/freezing of LibreOffice.

Make sure that you can insert citations in a fresh document. If you can, it might be the case, that you are getting an "invisible" prompt as Zotero might be attempting to prompt you for accidentally edited citation text or similar.
  • Thank you both very much for your advice - updated LibreOffice extension didn't help but switching to the Zotero beta and inserting citations into a fresh document has!
