Zotero not working with Word 2013 installed on Ubuntu 16.04 with Crossover 16

I have Word 2013 working on Linux Ubuntu 16.04 installed with Crossover 16. I also have zotero standalone for windows installed with Crossover 16 in the same bottle. I installed zotero plugin with no issues, but when when I click on "add citation" this error message appears.

Zotero experienced an error updating your document.

An unhandled exception occured. [getDocument:document.cpp]'An unhandled exception occured. [getDocument:document.cpp]' when calling method: [zoteroIntegrationApplication::getDocument]

Am I missing something?

Zotero Word integration on non-native environments is not officially supported, but people have managed to get it to work with wine before https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/12426/word-intergration-with-wine

Thanks a lot. The solution that involved modifying the Zotero.dotm file worked perfectly.

Even though it is not officially supported I would suggest posting this solution here:

Crossover 16 is now officially supporting Microsoft Office 2013 and more people may come across the issue in the future

We'd rather keep that off the official Zotero support pages as that indicates some official support. The solution is a fairly big hack, can break at any point, and we do not test or develop for these sorts of configurations, so any update could break it.

We would be willing to take a pull request for the plugin repo if somebody is willing to get that to work in both windows and linux.

The WINE solution (with a link to that forum thread) is already posted on the troubleshooting page:

it clearly states that it's not supported. I think that's a good solution.
