Edit existing item types?

Hi,
I am currently introducing Zotero to my department. It is a great tool, but we are working a lot with standards and there is no item type "standards" in Zotero. Is it possible to add an item type or edit an existing item type, so people can easily add standards to the zotero database?

I have found a lot of discussions about that, but nobody seemed to have an answer.

Perhaps someone can help.
Thank you,
Donsilen
  • Perhaps it would be already enough if one could change for example "author" to "standard title" and "title" to "description" and so on. Is that somehow possible? I am suprised there is no standards item type as many researches are using zotero for years.. and many to come ;)
  • A standard type is planned (https://github.com/citation-style-language/zotero-bits/issues/52) to be added to the Citation Style Language (CSL) Zotero uses to generate its citations. When that happens, it will be added to Zotero.

Currently, you cannot create custom fields or item types. In the mean time, you can get reasonably close to correct citations with the Report type. If you need extra fields for citations (e.g., ISBN), there is a way to add them (see here: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/64064/best-item-type-for-british-or-iso-standards). Let us know if there are specific issues you run into using Report.

The Zotero variant, Juris-M (http://juris-m.github.io) has a Standard item, as well as other extra features for legal and multilingual work. If all you are looking for is a Standard item type, the complexity of all of the other features probably isn't worth it for you.
  • Thank you so much for this fast and detailed answer.

I guess we will then continue to work with the report type. I will let you know if we have specific issues with the report type. thanks!
