Zotero Copy the link, when importing a new item (ID:1160021655)
We have a shared library of pdf files in our project. We use Zotero for citing to these files in our reports.
When someone in the network gives a new file and puts it in the shared library, then imports that item to his own Zotero library with a link to attachment. Then export the item with zotero, and send the export file (e.g. bib file) to us, but when we import that file, Zotero makes a new copy of that item!!!
I want to zotero import an item as it was exported. We don't want to generate a new library of pdf files!!!
How to test this bug:
1- download a pdf file from the internet and download its citation file too.
2- Import the standard citation file into Zotero via "File/Import" menu.
3- Write click on the imported item and choose the downloaded pdf via "Add Attachment/Attach Link to File" menu.
4- Then right click on the file again and click "Export Item" menu, then export it to a desired format, for example Bibtex.
5- Now import the exported .bib file via Import menu, you see the new imported item and a pdf file attached to it.
6- Right click on Attached file and choose "Show File" menu. you see that zotero has made a copy of your original file. Its a HUGE BUG, because Zotero is trying to copy a new Huge library for each network user.
7- If using the "ZotFile" plugin, unfortunately it copy the file to its "Source Folder" too.
please help me, or at least fix it in new version.

But I don't understand why you're using import/export in the first place. You can just drag items between group and personal libraries -- though links don't work in group libraries.
"adamsmith: why you're using import/export in the first place" It was only an example to see the problem in importing a file with link attachment.
In our small company network we have about 20GB of pdf file in our library (on the server) and person is responsible to add these files citation information to Zotero. She also attach the link to file (with server address) to the zotero items. Then when we want to import her added items to our own Zotero, Zotero tries to copy the library in our computer!!
How can I solve the problem?? or at least request for "adding an option" in the future zotero versions??
With this option zotero decides to copy the attached file or attaches the link, when importing a new item. I think it would be very helpfull as I addresses the forums above.
Thanks for helps and supports.
