why do the short title second citations include year of publication

I'm using CMOS full note and whenever I have a second reference to the same book, it include the publication year. I've not seen that before and I don't believe it is proper CMOS.
How do I fix this?

    The style adds a date when title and author are the same -- so this would happen if you have two versions of that book referenced.

    Is there an easy way to find which note is linked to a duplicate item in another library? This is a mess!

    you could switch to a numeric citation style (e.g. Nature or IEEE) in a copy of your document (just in case converting back causes problems) and see which ones have a different number.
