pdfinfo-Linux-x86_64 is not recognised while pdftotext-Linux-x86_64 is on uptodate Debian/Stretch

I did a manual installation of pdfinfo and pdftotext links and .version files in the zotero data directory. The binaries are /usr/bin/pdf{info,totext} from poppler-utils.

But Zotero only recognises pdftotext but not pdfinfo ("pdfinfo-Linux-x86_64 is NOT installed").

How to fix this?
  • I forgot to mention: Zotero was installed in firefox from the zotero.org Download page as from today.

    Thankx for any help, gregor
  • Install the zotero-modified versions of these from within zotero: https://www.zotero.org/support/pdf_fulltext_indexing
  • Thanks, I followed the instructions for manual installation from exactly this page. obviously I would rather like to utilise my systems binaries...
  • Can you provide a Debug ID for Zotero startup, using the "Enable after restart" option?
  • Sure, the Debug ID is D846026026.

    (3)(+0000000): pdftotext version 3.04 registered

    (3)(+0000001): pdfinfo redirection script registered

    (3)(+0000000): pdfinfo version 3.04 registered
    That looks right to me.

    If it's still not working, I would start by doing a regular install via the prefs, make sure it shows both tools as installed, and then try replacing the binaries with symlinks if desired.
  • Yes I saw this after posting the Debug ID. These are the modifies binaries zotero.org provides. I have no clue how they came on my computer. At the same time my collection vanished (as in: could not be seen in the Zotero pane. The sqlite file was still there bigger even).

    I removed zotero, deleted it's data directory, did a reinstall, imported the collections, provided links, .version files and pdfinfo.sh:

    ~/.zotero$ lt
    total 4052
    drwxr-xr-x 167 grfz grfz 12288 Dez 27 11:21 ..

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 grfz grfz 18 Dez 27 14:38 pdftotext -> /usr/bin/pdftotext
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 grfz grfz 16 Dez 27 14:38 pdfinfo -> /usr/bin/pdfinfo
    -rw-r--r-- 1 grfz grfz 7 Dez 27 14:38 pdftotext.version
    -rw-r--r-- 1 grfz grfz 7 Dez 27 14:38 pdfinfo.version

    drwxr-xr-x 7 grfz grfz 4096 Dez 27 14:39 .

    ~/.zotero$ cat *.version
    0.38.0
    0.38.0

    Still no luck it does not discover the pdf* utils. Another Debug ID is D66139688 which is quit privacy sensitive. You now know which kind of dishes I prefer.

    Those aren't correct filenames for any of the files.

    Again, do a normal install of the tools through through prefs, confirm that it's working, and then just replace the two binaries with symlinks.
  • Argh, sorry. Now Zotero discovers the utilities but

    - indexes only one file, not all of them.
    - zotero.sqlite is suddenly much bigger (s. below)
    - zotero does not show my Library any more, everything is simply empty

    Should this be a different issue report?

    Thanks so far, Gregor

    zotero.sqlite would be much bigger if you indexed your files, because that's where the full-text index is kept. Not sure what you mean by "indexes only one file".
    zotero does not show my Library any more, everything is simply empty
    Yes, start a new thread for that, and provide more details and a Report ID.
