JSTOR translator problems

Hello,

I've been unsuccessfully trying to download citations from JSTOR into Zotero through NYU Library's proxy server (a problem that I have noticed appearing on numerous threads). When I click on the icon in the URL bar (that of a DOI translator), I receive the following message:

"An error occurred while saving this item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information."

I have consulted the FAQ for translator issue troubleshooting, to no avail. Here are the details of my situation:

The Debug ID is D1062527709

Zotero Standalone v. 4.0.28.8
Zotero Chrome Plugin v. 4.0.26
Chrome Version 46.0.2490.80 (64-bit)

DOI translator

An article I could not receive a citation for:

Thanks for having a look at this...
  • the main problem is that NYU's proxy is masking the site's URL and Zotero doesn't even recognize it as JSTOR.

(The secondary problem is then that Zotero picks up JSTOR's DOIs on the page and tries to import those, but they aren't actually registered on CrossRef, where Zotero (and everyone else) gets data for DOIs.)

Best options I can offer you is to try with Firefox (which I think may work--Zotero can handle more complex proxies there) or use a different method for remote authentication. Most universities offer VPN.
  • Thanks for having a look. I tried with Firefox, but received the same error message...
  • did you enable proxy re-direction in the Firefox add-on and have Standalone closed? I can't test, but I do think this should work.
  • I also attend a school that's part of NYU's library consortium, and I'm having the same issue with JSTOR.

I've tried closing Zotero Standalone and Firefox, then re-opening Firefox. At first I was hopeful after doing this because after logging in to the library proxy to get to JSTOR, there was a message from Firefox that said Zotero detected I was using a proxy. It asked me to enable treating it that way, and I did. Then, I remembered reading on a different thread that JSTOR requires you to accept some terms and conditions the first time you download a PDF each session. So, I did that too.

    Unfortunately, no luck.

    - The "Saving to Zotero..." box still appears in the bottom left
    - The main popup correctly identifies the list of articles on the page
    - No entry is added to Zotero, nor is the PDF downloaded
  • Forgot to say, I also manually visited the https site to approve the certificate before trying.
  • what does it say for you when you hover over the Save to Zotero icon.
(It'll start with "Save to Zotero" I want to know what it says behind that in parentheses).
  • It says "Save to Zotero... (JSTOR)(Ctrl+Shift+S)".
  • pretty sure we're going to be able to make that work for you. Should have something to test by tomorrow.
  • Awesome. I'll help however I can.
  • I believe this should work now: Update translators from the General tab of the Zotero preferences (Update Now), and try again.
This will only work (provided it does) for setups where you see "Save to Zotero (JSTOR)" when hovering over the URL bar icon, which I think for NYU will only be the case when using Firefox with Standalone closed.
I don't expect we'll have a solution for the issue with connectors on URLs that are entirely masked by the proxy in the foreseeable future.
  • It worked for me, even better than you predicted!

    1. Worked even with the Standalone opened.
    2. Worked even when I forgot to do the once-per-session agree to terms and conditions.

    Thanks!
