  • you need Zotero Standalone to be installed in addition to the connector.
  • Ok thnak you! But how do I install Zotero Standalone on my linux distro ?
  • All you need to do is download it, unpack it into a suitable location (e.g. ~/.local/share on Ubuntu-like distros though Zotero doesn't care about the location as long as you have write access), and run it.

There's also an unofficial PPA and installer script for Ubuntu/Mint:
    https://launchpad.net/~smathot/+archive/ubuntu/cogscinl
  • ok but how do I run a tar.gz file ? I just want it to pop up want I click on the icone on my web browser!
  • I've unzip it but I still need to reach the file location to laucnch the program! How could I install and use it like a normal program into ubuntu ?

(Here is how to set things up manually. The alternative is to use the PPA, as adamsmith suggests below.)

To run the program, open a terminal, navigate to the unzipped subdirectory, and run the script:./run-zotero.sh
You will see the Standalone icon in the Unity launcher on the left. You can set it permanently in the launcher by right-clicking and selecting "keep in launcher" -- but after stopping Standalone, clicking on the icon will not work, yet.

To activate the icon, you will need to create a *.desktop file for the script. Here is a thread from Ubuntu Launchpad that explains how to do that:

  • I'd generally recommend becoming somewhat familiar with running software from the command line if you're going to use linux--it's a very useful, very easy to learn skill--but I linked to the PPA for Ubuntu which allows you to install Zotero through the Software Center and then run it from the launcher bar.
That page has install instructions for the PPA, and there's also a GUI-only version of instructions for adding PPAs in general available at http://askubuntu.com/questions/4983/what-are-ppas-and-how-do-i-use-them/40351#40351
