APA and doi:

The doi is not correctly formatted when adding the bibliography.
My citation is: (Bokeno, 2011)
When I add the bibliography I get:
Bokeno, R. (2011). Putting people first. Development and Learning in Organizations: An International Journal, 25(1), 25–27. http://doi.org/10.1108/14777281111096816

BUT the doi should not have http://doi.org...it SHOULD BE:
doi:10.1108/14777281111096816

Why is Zotero adding http://doi.org when it is not in the reference?
  • because that is correct according to the APA's 2012 supplement for Electronic Resources to the APA Manual, 6th Edition.
  • Hi, this was bugging me too as I spent ages going through all my references deleting the "http://doi.org" bit out of all my DOIs, having read somewhere that you should only use the numerical string starting 10.etc. But yesterday Zotero started autonomatically including the prefix again - aaahj!!
However, I just found this blog which said things changed recently (as Adam has told us!) and that both formats are ok, as long as you consistently use one format or the other.... Here's the link:
    http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/digital-object-identifier-doi/
  • I've just noticed that the APA blog suggests a slightly different citation format:
What is this DX in the URL about? It is certainly not part of the current APA 6 CSL output.

The "dx" part also works, but is unnecessary for the links to work. DOI.org prefers it to be left out. The APA style customer service indicated that leaving it out is acceptable.

I would strongly recommend you not delete the http://doi.org/ part, as it makes using the DOI much easier for readers and is preferred by APA over the old format.

    I completely agree:
I would strongly recommend you not delete the http://doi.org/ part, as it makes using the DOI much easier for readers and is preferred by APA over the old format.
Why on earth is APA then including the apparently superfluous "dx" part in its documentation? Less is more!

    EDIT:

    @zuphilip

I wonder whether the current APA 6 DOI handling should be also adopted for DGfP and ZfPäd?
  • I wonder whether the current APA 6 DOI handling should be also adopted for DGfP and ZfPäd?
The DGfP is based mainly on the 2007 edition of the book Richtlinien zur Manuskriptgestaltung Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie. I don't think they have anything mentioned about doi in this book. Is there any other way that the association (DGfP) comminunicates its style requirement?

If you have any (other) source for the journal (ZfPäd) requirements or any reliable words from the editors, we can consider to change the implementation.
  • The use of dx was a technical thing that concerned web server management: dx.doi.org being a sub-domain of the doi.org domain. They no longer need the sub-domain to accomplish the needed control. At the time that the APA guideline was released the dx was the preference of the DOI entity. This change is a simple result of technical improvements to the doi.org web servers.

I hope that professors and editors with particularly severe OCD will not penalize authors for using what is the current standard. Be prepared to convince them with evidence from APA. I personally know someone who requires students to use APA 5!
  • Anyone have any code to suppress the "http://doi.org/" and just leave the "doi:"? Or maybe there's an older version of the citation style that I can use?

I'm making do with a find-and-replace function for now, but I'd like to get Zotero back to the old style of "doi:" just because it's still the convention.
  • The last APA version with doi: is at
    https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/raw/2902d4412a1617322e3d08832683eb703928db5a/apa.csl
you'll want to change the id to prevent if from being constantly overwritten on updates.
I think distinguishing between a standard and the "convention" around its adaptation is a terrible idea, but oh well.
  • Thanks! Sometimes it's best to play it safe.
