ID: 570347760 Chrome connector and standalone unable to save pages

Chrome connector has stopped sending info to standalone, even though it says that standalone is available and the latter is open. I noticed this error message came up and I'm assuming that has something to do with it:
[JavaScript Error: "Cannot read property '1' of null" {file: "eval at <anonymous> (chrome-extension://ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc/inject/translate_inject.js:50:9), <anonymous>" line: 104}]

This is really delaying my research and very frustrating. Please help!!

P.S.: I've been scanning the forums for solutions and have found none. I have the most up-to-date versions of Chrome, connector, and standalone and I have already tried resetting and updating the translators.

The categories don't matter that much and if need be you can change them by editing your post.
  • OK, sorry. I don't know what category that would be, as I'm not sure if it's a translator or standalone issue. Do you call the chrome connector a plugin? I think not, but I didn't see one for extensions...
  • Can you provide a Debug ID (different from Report ID) from Chrome for a save attempt?
  • That's from Zotero, not from Chrome.

  • Someone with LexisNexis access (zuphilip?) will have to take a look at this, but the error is effectively LexisNexis.js:104:124 "Cannot read property '1' of null", i.e. var disb = /<input type="hidden" name="disb" value="([^"]+)">/.exec(text);disb is null
  • CKVienna - could you try whether a simpler site still works? How about
    http://www.worldcat.org/title/wealth-of-nations-vol-1/oclc/59231630&referer=brief_results
    for example?
  • It does manage to save a citation, but it also does not take a snapshot, even though I've set it to do so. Also, the snapshot option doesn't come up under attachments anymore. It's weird because it was working earlier today, including on LexisNexis, and then suddenly stopped.
  • we wouldn't expect a Snapshot on Worldcat, so that's working fine. So this is a Lexis/Nexis specific issue.

If you don't mind, please run us through what you're trying to save exactly. LN doesn't have permalinks, so we need to know which search terms and which databases/publications.
  • WorldCat translator doesn't save snapshots, since there's no real content hosted on WorldCat. You can check something like http://elifesciences.org/content/3/e02862 to verify that snapshots are working.
  • I just checked a random page in LexisNexis (or is it now just Nexis?) and it seems to work in firefox, the snapshot as well. But (Lexis)Nexis does have permalinks.
  • The search terms were (this is using "power search"): HLEAD(Hamas) and HLEAD(attack!) or HLEAD(bomb!) or HLEAD(gun!) or HLEAD(shoot!) or HLEAD(rocket) or HLEAD(mortar) or HLEAD(kidnap!) or HLEAD(abduct!) or HLEAD(hostage)

Custom date range 17/11/2012 to 31/12/2012

I use a custom batch of sources including Israeli, British, and American English-language newspapers and newswire organizations including AFP, AP, DFP, and Reuters, so I won't be able to reproduce exactly the results for you. But it doesn't work on any of them, so just using all English language news ought to do the trick (though it will return more results than mine). Hope this helps.
  • It might also make a difference that this is Nexis UK
  • This works for me in firefox, e.g. http://www.lexisnexis.com/uk/nexis/docview/getDocForCuiReq?lni=57DG-11D1-JDKD-P3Y0&csi=8399&oc=00240&perma=true Is that working for you with chrome connector too?

Moreover, please try also aurimasv url http://elifesciences.org/content/3/e02862 to verify that snapshots are working.
  • Yes! That works. It worked yesterday, too, then stopped working. LN seems to be finicky or unreliable. Is that possible? Anyway, the snapshot worked there as well. I don't know what the problem was, but here's hoping it's OK now. Thanks for your input!
  • LN might be problematic if you work in multiple tabs?
  • Hmm, OK. I do tend to end up with more than one tab open. I'll keep an eye out.
  • multiple LN tabs, that is. Multiple tabs in the browser are not an issue, obviously.
  • Multiple LN tabs? I don't even know what that could mean except for having LN open in more than one browser tab. I'm not aware that LN has its own tabs... not so "obvious," I don't think. Most of us naturally have no idea how Zotero really works, so how would we know whether browser tabs can affect it?
  • having LN open in more than one browser tab
    exactly this.
Most of us naturally have no idea how Zotero really works, so how would we know whether browser tabs can affect it?
Fair enough, but it's not really affecting only Zotero. E.g. for some sites (not necessarily LN), if you have two tabs with search results open, only the search results you retrieved last will work properly. Those sites usually keep track of your last action on the server and the next action you perform depends entirely on your previous action. So opening a new tab tab, doing something there, then coming back to the old tab and trying to follow links can sometimes lead to weird results.
  • OK, that makes sense. Turns out I knew what you were saying after all. I'll keep an eye out for that, but I don't think I was doing more than one search at a time at that time. I'll come back to this if it happens again. I'll be on that project again on Monday or Tuesday.
  • New error ID: 2019426799. I'm not sure the report is related to the problem. I'm having a problem I also had last time: It's saving the snapshot, but when I double-click it to open it, chrome just says "webpage not found" (it is surfing to a location on my hard drive, but it seems nothing's there). The snapshots are not much use if they're not really being saved or if they're unopenable...
  • This is the ID from connector, btw: 2086941311
  • I'd assume all of these are site specific, so please always provide a URL.
  • This is lexisnexis.com (/uk) (varying precise URLs that are temporary). Currently, I'm filling out all the information manually, downloading the webpage manually, and then creating a link to the file. Much slower that way. Oddly, when I tried to "attach stored copy of file" it also didn't work. Only a link to the file worked. In any case, the "snapshot" function attaches a file that cannot be opened or is blank.
  • when I tried to "attach stored copy of file" it also didn't work
That would indicate something odd happening with your system. Are you working in a group library or personal library? Could you submit a debug log for an attempt to attach stored copy of file that fails? This is likely the underlying issue that will need to be resolved first.
  • Hi,

zuphilip: The version my university uses appears not to be the "Academic" one, which may only be available in the US. The permalink icon does not exist.

    For aurimas: D1019481542

    Thanks
  • Oh, and here I have to show my ignorance again: What do you mean by group and personal libraries? I am the only one who uses Zotero and it's all on one account. Does that answer the question?
