adding metadata for pdfs

I have retrieved several pdfs for which Zotero could not find metadata. The current item, for example, is in my Zotero library as p153.pdf. I would like to manually add the metadata, but the only method I have been able to develop is to create a new record, fill it manually, and drag the pdf to it. I was surprised there was no way to create that in the right-hand frame when the pdf is highlighted. There is no way to add a note or tag in that right-hand frame either. Am I missing something?

    Right-click -> Create Parent Item from Selected Item

    right click on the PDF --> Create Parent Item.
    The PDF and the Zotero item with the metadata you attach it to are, technically, separate items, which is why you can't just fill out the metadata on the right.
