Deleting references

Hi, I was using Zotero to insert citations and references(bibliographies). The problem I keep encountering is that when I insert a new bibliography, some of my other bibliographies are deleted. I do not want them to be deleted since they are still cited in my text. I think the reason this is happening is that I have manually copied and pasted some bibliographies from a previous reference page. How can I make sure that Zotero does not delete them. Thanks!
  • what do you mean by "bibliography" in this context? Individual bibliography entries? And if so, where are those placed in relationship to the Zotero-generated bibliography?
    Could you give an example?
  • Thanks for your quick reply. What I mean by bibliographies is my reference list. For example I cited Hernandez et al. (2008) in-text. Then I copied and pasted the reference at the end of my document in my reference list:
    Hernandez, D. J., Denton, N. A., & Macartney, S. E. (2008). Children in immigrant families: Looking to America's future. Social Policy Report, 22(3). 1-23.

Next I cited Lonigan and Whitehurst (1998) in-text. I entered this in-text citation using the add-in bar that links word to Zotero. I scrolled down to my reference list and selected add bibliography and added:
Lonigan, C. J. & Whitehurst, G. J. (1998). Relative efficacy of parent and teacher involvement in a shared-reading intervention of preschool children from low-income backgrounds. Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 13, 263-290.

Once I did this the Hernandez reference disappeared from the reference list, but stayed in the text as an in-text citation. I added the Hernandez reference back to the reference list, but each time I add a reference to the reference list using Zotero some of the other references that I had copied and pasted will disappear. My reference list is in alphabetical order. Another reference that disappeared was one by Storch which was placed at the end of my reference list. Please let me know if you need more information.
  • yeah, adding items via cut&paste to the reference list won't work. Ideally you'd just add the citation via the Word add-on and this will all happen automatically.
If that's really not feasible, you'll need to add the items to the bibliography using the "Edit Bibliography" button.
  • Hi. The problem is that not all of my references are in Zotero because there are some references that are not properly formatted (e.g., government/organization documents) or I haven't had time to update all of my references. Also, there are several papers that I have been working on for awhile that already have a reference list and I am going back and editing them. I just started using Zotero a few months ago. If I use "edit bibliography" can I insert a reference that is not in Zotero?

Another question, is there a way to get my references to be formatted using APA 6th edition. In general the organization is correct, but the details are incorrect. For example, a title will appear "Relative Efficacy of Parent and Teacher Involvement in a Shared-Reading Intervention of Preschool Children from Low-Income Backgrounds" when it should appear as "Relative efficacy of parent and teacher involvement in a shared-reading intervention of preschool children from low-income backgrounds". That is, one is upper and lower case while the other is lower case except the first Word and proper nouns. Thanks.
  • For the first issue--you can't really mix bibliographies with Zotero entries and items not in Zotero, no, sorry.

    For the second issue:
