Zotero experienced an error updating your document.

This is on a Windows 7 PC with Firefox 12, although the problem persisted once we uninstalled and re-installed on Firefox 16 with Zotero, and Zotero word integration, and trying to use CWYW with Word as part of Office 2010 Corporate edition.

CTRL-ALT-A and CTRL-ALT-C work fine. Whenever we try with the Zotero Add-in in Word to use CWYW, we get the same error:

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [zoteroIntegrationApplication.getDocument]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/integration.js :: _callIntegration :: line 273" data: no]

Any ideas???

Tom
  • The full report ID might be useful, but it looks like security software is interfering or Zotero and Word are running with different privileges.

    Okay, I had the same problem and after hours of debugging I found a solution to this problem. Just like TomPasley, the error message:

    Zotero experienced an error updating your document.

    [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [zoteroIntegrationApplication.getDocument]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/integration.js :: _callIntegration :: line 273" data: no]

    always popped-up on saved .docx document whenever I clicked anyone of the Zotero buttons under the Add-ins tab. This happened on Word 2010 on Windows 7 (on two different computers), and on Word 2010 on Windows 8 (on one computer), and on Firefox 15.0 and 16.0 (beta). Interestingly enough, Zotero worked as it should on unsaved document.

    The debugging process included uninstall/reinstall Zotero add-ons on Firefox, and using Zotero Standalone version instead.

    The solution is simple:

    - if you use Zotero Firefox add-ons which integrates with Word, you need to give Firefox administrator rights (right-click on firefox.exe, Run as administrator). EDIT: Not recommended for security reasons.

    - or, if you run Zotero Standalone, you need to run it as administrator too.

    Hope it helps. Cheers.

    antianto: Are you sure Word isn't running as administrator? It certainly shouldn't be necessary to run Firefox or Zotero Standalone as administrator otherwise, and I think doing so might break Word integration instead of fixing it.
  • (also, running FF as an administrator is a bad idea security-wise)
  • Word 2010 is not set to run as administrator by default. The configuration that works best for me right now is using the Firefox add-on Zotero 3.0.8 along with Zotero Standalone 3.0.8, which is given administrative rights. Everything works doing so, but as soon as Zotero Standalone is run without administrator rights, the aforementioned error message appears.

    I had some worries regarding giving administrator rights to Firefox, so I prefer using the standalone for this reason.
  • @adamsmith:

    I agree. I edited my first post to warn against doing so.

    I have to admit, the problem was with Word, which somehow had compatibility mode of for XP on a Windows 7 laptop?? Once this was cleared, the problem was resolved.
    Thanks for your help!
  • thanx for the tip!
  • I was having this problem too and have now resolved it, mine was also resulting from Word running as administrator. Once I changed that Zotero add-in went back to working perfectly.
    Steps:
    Close any word documents you have open -> Right click on the Word icon -> Properties -> Compatibility. Make sure Run as administrator is not ticked, if it's not, click Change Setting for All users, and make sure Run as administrator is not checked there as well.
    Hope it works.
