Standalone not accessible from firefox connector

Hi, I've recently started using Zotero and have installed the standalone plus the Firefox connector. Problem is, when I have the standalone and Firefox open together and I click on the Zotero extension icon in Firefox, I get a message "Zotero Standalone was launched but is not accessible. If you experienced an error opening Zotero Standalone, restart Firefox".
Occasionally it appears to work as presumably intended, and clicking that icon takes me to the standalone version window, but I don't know what makes that happen - I've tried opening and closing the browser and the standalone in various orders, but no joy. Opening Firefox alone allows me to open the extension and the library (same library for both versions, in the default location for the standalone version), but if the standalone version is open, it appears to lock out the browser extension. Using XP and Firefox 25.0.1, Zotero version is the latest.

  • when you get that message, can you just switch to Zotero Standalone (e.g. using alt+tab or using clicking on its tab at the bottom of the screen)?
  • Also, can you confirm that you're running the latest version (4.0.16) of both Zotero for Firefox and Zotero Standalone?
  • Both Zotero versions are 4.0.16, and yes I can switch freely between Firefox and Zotero Standalone using alt+tab or the taskbar. Standalone seems to function fine in this situation. I've also tried restarting the computer and disabling all other Firefox extensions - no luck.
  • I'm guessing there are no new ideas on this problem :-(
  • same problem here :(

Are you running any security/firewall software? Are you connecting through a proxy? If something is interfering with connections to localhost or 127.0.0.1 this might fail. Those hosts should generally be blacklisted automatically, but you might want to check that in your proxy or firewall settings.
  • I'm not using firewall and no proxy. What happens is when firefox is open already for a few minutes, and then i try to open zotero, the error occurs. "Zotero Standalone was launched but is not accessible. If you experienced an error opening Zotero Standalone, restart Firefox."

what I do to work well is open firefox and then immediately open zotero.

To give us a better idea of what's going on, can you perform the following steps:
    1. Open Zotero Standalone
    2. Check the "Enable after restart" checkbox in the Debug Output Logging section of the Zotero preferences
    3. Close Zotero Standalone
    4. Open or restart Firefox (and wait a few minutes, if that's what you need to do to reproduce this error)
    5. Open Zotero Standalone
    6. Press the "Submit to Zotero Server" button in the Debug Output Logging section of the preferences and post the debug ID here
  • Hi Simon

Is not possible to do what you ask, because when i try to open zotero and the error occurs i turn off firefox, then open Zotero and when i try to see debugging logs, the debugging system is off and there are no logs.
  • sorry, I don't understand - which of the numbered steps above can you not follow?
  • I followed all steps, but is not possible to send the report to the zotero server, because there is no report to send

when the error occurs when i try to opening zotero, he does not save the report of errors, that's why there is nothing to send
  • And you're sure you remembered to check the "Enable after restart" box as per step 2.)? That would be very odd.
  • @Andywales - same instructions for you, btw.
  • @adamsmith, yes i check the "Enable after restart"
  • If you're on Windows, you also need to click OK and close the preference dialog.
  • The problem is not that, i tried several times with the same result.
  • So you get this error immediately after trying to start Zotero Standalone (e.g. from your desktop)? Or is it once you click on the Zotero icon in Firefox (while Zotero Standalone is already running)?

If it's the latter, when following Simon's directions, after step 5, when you go into Preferences -> Advanced -> General, does the button under "Debug Output Logging" say "Enable" or "Disable"?

The error occurs in both modes, using firefox plugin or in my windows desktop icon. When this situation happens firefox is running. To access again to zotero in any of the manners i need to restart firefox.

    The debugging button say disable.
  • wait but then it isn't clear to me what exactly is happening and it doesn't sound at all like the error reported originally.
So please start at the beginning and tell us exactly what is happening.
Note that the original poster can still switch between Zotero for Firefox and Standalone with alt tab. There is no need to restart Firefox or anything of the type.

Ohh Sorry, i think i made a some confusion here, because i dont understand well the start topic. I try to explain what happening here.

I'm using Zotero desktop and firefox with plugin, what's happen sometimes is: when i'm using firefox and try to open zotero with browser or windows desktop, an error occurs, and is not possible open application without restarting browser.

The error says, "Data Base of Zotero is in use and is needed restart firefox."

Normally this situation occurs when i use firefox for a long time and then i try to open zotero.
  • which OS? Which versions of Zotero, ZOtero Standalone, and Zotero for Firefox?
  • Windows 7 Ultimate
    Firefox 25.0.1
    Zotero Standalone 4.0.16
    Zotero for firefox 4.0.16
  • Is your Zotero data directory in an unusual location (e.g. dropbox folder or a network drive)? Try disabling any security software you may have running and see if it fixes the issue.
  • yes, i use default directory. ok i go to try it, but i think this problem in in firefox, maybe firefox extension !

    Hi
I have the same problem in my Zotero. I installed it in Mozilla 25.0.1, some months ago.
    It was working very well.
Today it doesn't want to get opened and there is a window that says "Zotero Standalone was launched but is not accessible. If you experienced an error opening Zotero Standalone, restart Firefox".
The thing is that i have never downloaded Zotero Standalone! I had only Zotero 4.0.16 for firefox.
There is no way of opening it. I have a big big problem.
  • Can you provide a Debug ID from Firefox startup through the pane-opening attempt using the "Enable after resart" option?
  • I can't
I was reading the Debug command on the link you attached and I saw that for providing Debug ID I need to open Zotero preferences. But I dont find the way of opening this. It seems that all Zotero is locked.
I tried three ways of opening zotero settings:
-the toolbar on the bottom of firefox screen
    -tools --> zotero
    -tools --> add-ons --> Zotero 4.0.16 (options)
No one of these three ways works
  • -tools --> add-ons --> Zotero 4.0.16 (options)
What happens when you do this?
  • it shows me the 'preferences' menu of zotero for less than half a second. Then, it dissapears and there is a window of Windows saying "there is no installed app that can open this attachment (zotero). Find an application in the Store"

It's a spanish version of zotero and windows (8), so I try to make the translations the best I can.

I really than you very much your courtesy for paying attention to this problem
  • Could you post the exact message in Spanish?
