remote access without proxy

My university (UFF, Brazil) don't have proxy for remote access.
we have access to journals through the periodicos capes http://www.periodicos.capes.gov.br/<meu espaço<CAFE-RNP<Universidade federal fluminense<enter<password (https://cafe.sti.uff.br/idp/Authn/UserPassword).

There is a possible configuration for using zotero this way without proxy?
  • Once you sign in and navigate to some article, what is the URL that you see in the address bar?

Can you also show us a screenshot of what the page would look like? Upload the screenshot to an image hosting site like http://imgur.com and post the link here.

If you can, try to access some english journal like Nature.
  • For exemple,

The sciencedirect open in this link:
    www-sciencedirect-com.ez24.periodicos.capes.gov.br

    I put some images here:
    http://www.4shared.com/dir/Aa4bKnzn/Journals.html
  • That is actually a proxy. Unfortunately, Zotero does not currently support this kind of URL scheme. It may be supported in the future though.

Are you trying to have Zotero perform automatic proxy redirection? Or are you just trying to import items into Zotero from these URLs?

Neither of those will be currently possible, but I just want to make sure I understand what you need.
  • For exemple,

The sciencedirect open in this link:
    www-sciencedirect-com.ez24.periodicos.capes.gov.br

    I put some images here:

I get it. I tried both ways: import and automatic.
Until last year the UFF used the traditional proxy. It was much more practical!

    Thank you very much anyway.
  • Very sadly, currently having the same problem.

Quite a lot of UK universities are changing their systems to 'Shibboleth', which is open-source and is used in the backend as kcondeixa mentioned.
This link gives some indications how the system works: http://www.switch.ch/aai/demo/2/simple.html

While it is nice to have a single sign on technique, it is really frustrating when it comes to the Zotero integration.

Due to this (and the open source nature of the software): Any chance for a work around or maybe some support from Zotero side aurimas? If needed, I could test any possible solution!!!

    Thanks.
  • While Zotero won't be able to automate the redirection, I don't see why it should impact Zotero working on resources accessed through Shibboleth. Does that really not work?
  • What I thought (and this might be really n00bie-style - so sorry in advance).

My university uses the above technique for checking if I am a member of the university who is egliable to access the ressource.
So, the database which needs a yes or no decision must have link scheme like that:
    https://www.university.edu/xyz/idp/Authn/UserPassword?login=Herecomesthelinktothesiteafterpositiveaccess

I am not sure how the link structure is - the above is just a guess.
But if we could know the structure, maybe it would be possible to add a link, such as
https://www.university.edu/xyz/idp/Authn/UserPassword?login=... in the proxy field - such as many of the Ezproxies.

Sd mentioned above... being really a N00bie when it comes to that!!!

I tried it now for weeks and yes, it does not work as it is intended. Retrieving full-texts does very sadly not work. The only option is going manually to the database, clicking e.g. on the PDF and than 'Save to Zotero'. This is fine for new iteams to add, but many of my colleagues and friends have huge Zotero databases with records where they would like to attach the full-text.
  • Are you using Zotero for Firefox or Zotero Standalone with some other browser? When you're accessing the PDF via the web browser, what do you see in the URL bar? Can you also right-click the link to the PDF, copy the link address, and paste it here?

    Dear Aurimas,

    thanks for your reply.

I am using Zotero for Firefox (4.0.16), Firefox Version 25.0.1

I thought I will upload a picture series starting from searching an article in Google Scholar (001), getting linked to the database (002), getting asked to login with my institutional login credentials (003), after choosing my institution I get linked to my university single sign-on page (Shibboleth, 004). There I sign in and finally get linked to the full-text.
    Link: http://postimg.org/gallery/5dvdua78/

Direct PDF address: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1549-0831.2012.00096.x/pdf (copied via right-click on the PDF-Link, save link address)

btw: Link structure looks similar (no proxy URL before the address) for other big databases, such as ScienceDirect, Springer, etc.

All the screens also show the URLs I am accesing. Nevertheless, I have the (bad) feeling that the case is exactly the same than the one created by kcondeixa in May.
The really bad thing is, that more and more institutions are moving to that platform as it generally helps the institutions to manage their accesses to internal and external platforms and additionally supports (some) users with just having one login for everything they need to use....

Would be really great if you could find a way how we could get this up and running within Zotero!
    Thanks in advance
  • no, this isn't the same as kcondeixa - look at the URLs in her/his case: They're all altered from the original, whereas yours look just like the original, so this should really work.

When you click the URL bar icon in Zotero - have you already run through the Shibboleth log in?
Also, what type of privacy settings are you using in Firefox?
  • Maybe very stupid question, but where do the URLs mentioned by kcondeixa get altered?!

"When you click the URL bar icon in Zotero - have you already run through the Shibboleth log in?"
I tried it both - before and after logging in.

"Also, what type of privacy settings are you using in Firefox?"
Standard. I even reset Firefox completely, deinstalled, rebooted and installed it now new just for testing it.

Maybe I am totally wrong, but let me shortly explain again, what I think is working with my configuration and what isn't.

What is working: Retrieving metadata from various databases and also from my local library (by adding the OpenURL from my library).
What isn't working: Zotero does not recognise my proxy (while it does that with the library of my previous institution which uses 'EzProxy'). Due to this, I cannot automatically retrieve the full-text when saving a record which definetly has the full-text available as well.
  • Retrieve metadata only uses google scholar and DOI, neither of which require authentication, so that's not surprise.

kcondeixa gets routed through tge library to the e-resources and the URL displayed is, in fact, proxied - note e.g. the hyphens in www-sciencedirect-com

Shibboleth isn't actually a proxy, but an authorization service. Once you're authenticated through Shibboleth, you (and by extension Zotero) should be able to access all authorized content on the site. Authentications - or at a minimum authentication sessions - are typically remembered via cookies which Zotero is able to preserve, so I'm not sure why this wouldn't be working. Given the large number of libraries using Shibboleth I'm also surprised that we've never heard of any problems before, so I'm wondering whether this actually is a more general problem or limited to either you or your institution.

But you don't have to log in every time, right? Just the first time during a session.

Could you provide a Debug ID (http://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output) for an attempt to save that article from wiley.com _after_ you have already authenticated with your university. That is, first try to access the PDF, log in, then go back to the abstract page, start Debug Logging, and attempt to save the article to Zotero.

The way cookies are currently handled when downloading file attachments may prevent this from working. The debug log should be able to clear this up.
  • Dear aurimas,

sorry for the late reply, was out of office.
Please find the log-file within the following ID: "D677018164."

In case you need any further details, logs, etc. - please feel free to let me know here.
    Hope this helps! Thanks.
  • Could you check if step 7 on this page (http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues) makes any difference?

@Dan, anything interesting in that debug log?
  • I'm not seeing a save attempt in there.
  • Dear Aurimas,

    thanks for the reply.
No, it does not make any difference. I even used two different systems (both Win7, most up-to-date Firefox and Zotero versions), freshly installed.

    Dear Dan,
you are right, I just opened the file but did not save it.
So, please find a new log with the following ID: "D1649902463."
I followed Aurimas instructions above and then saved the PDF-file first to the local computer directly after that into the Zotero library. Hope, this helps?

What's the issue here, exactly? I'm not seeing a problem in the debug output.

But just to clarify, from the output it appears you're actually trying to save the PDF directly and using the Save to Zotero option in the Firefox open/save dialog, with the Retrieve Metadata checkbox. Is that the case? As far as I can tell that's working for you — if not, I think you'll have to say what the precise problem is, so I, at least, am not clear on that — but that's not actually what you should be doing if you're already on a supported site. You just want to click Zotero's address bar icon. The only time to download the PDF directly and use the option in the save dialog is if you're downloading some PDF that you found somewhere other than in an actual bibliographic database supported by Zotero.
