JSTOR

I can't save any JSTOR articles to my library even after I accept the terms and conditions once during session (as instructed on the known translator issues page. I am using the most updated versions of both firefox and zotero on a macbook air. I don't know how to get around this.

  • what do you mean exactly by "can't add"? What happens?
  • The little pop up window at the bottom right hand side of the screen that generally says "Saving" and then tells when the item has been saved in the library says, "Could Not Save Item: An error occurred while saving this item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information." I have followed the provided link to the Known Translator Issues page, and under minor issues JSTOR is listed. The two options are that I would need to accept the terms and conditions and download the pdf I'm trying to save at least once during each session, which I have tried only to receive the same error box next time I try to save with the "Save to Zotero" button in the URL box, or that the translator only works when I have access to JSTOR (when I can download articles), which I can obviously do. The Zotero save button does indeed appear in the URL box when I'm on the page for the article I want to save. So I'm not sure which of these issues apply to me, and therefore I don't know how to fix it.

  • Yes, I've already checked all the troubleshooting steps and I've done everything on the list that I can do. Everything is updated and I've made sure my settings are correct.

    I will attach the link for the website I'm trying to save from, but you will likely not be able to see it. It is JSTOR accessed through my university. I input my user name and password every time I access from off campus.

    OS? Zotero Standalone or Zotero for Firefox? Zotero version? Browser? Browser version?

    The results of step 6. What does the tooltip say?

    Most importantly, results of step 12. What's the Report ID?

    I have the same problem. I'm on MacOs 10.8.4; using Firefox 21.0 and Zotero for Firefox 4.0.8.

    If I use the link "Export Citation" and after when I click on the Export in RIS and automatically the transfer doing well in my Zotero library. So, it's the icon in the adress bar doesn't like to fonction.

    I was having a similar issue (not being able to save a pdf through my university's proxy); enabling third-party cookies "From visited" was all I needed to change to be able to save pdf files through my university's proxy.
    So I assume it IS the third-party cookie setting. Anyone: please advise if there is some other method.
  • JStor is suddenly not working for me, either. I get the "Could not save" error popup when trying to add to Zotero Standalone from either Firefox or Chrome, or when trying to add to Zotero from within Firefox, even after agreeing to JStor's terms and conditions (as per usual).

    I have Zotero 4.0.10 (Firefox, Standalone) and 4.0.8.2 (Chrome), and I'm running Firefox 23.0 on Windows 7 (64 bit).

    I can't seem to add anything from JStor at all. The last successful attempt was on the 23rd of July - and I can't think of anything in my setup (Firefox add-ons, Windows updates, etc) that has changed since then.

    I've run through the troubleshooting options, and none of them seem to apply. I've updated everything (except the Chrome extension), and still the same.

    Incidentally, Web of Science isn't working for me using Firefox and Standalone, either - but it does work using Chrome. I'll play with that one some more and open a new post.

    Any ideas?

  • re-read and follow step 12 of the troubleshooting instructions, please. We need more information.
  • I have been having the same JSTOR problem, though I've noticed one condition that may help diagnose it, or at least limit it, which may or may not be the same with others who have encountered it. Namely: the failure to translate seems to occur only with journal articles that are titled "Review" (i.e., book reviews), but not original articles as such.

    Note also, that if you click on the Zotero icon while displaying a list of search results (rather than after selecting a particular item), these two types of article also look quite different visually, with the regular articles identified by title, whereas the reviews all share the same title, "Review." Within JSTOR, in other words, reviews seem to be of a different species than other articles.

    For what it's worth, one such difference is that, at least for the small sample I've studied, journals do not grant each review its own new page - they usually start mid-page, both onscreen and in the downloaded PDF. Might this lack of a clean break be all or part of the problem? (Of course I can't see what this means in terms of underlying code.) I haven't researched this far enough to see what happens with review articles that do begin cleanly on their own page, e.g., the first one in a journal's review section, though even these would probably not end cleanly, but more typically mid-page with the next review crowing in on it.

    I'm using Zotero Standalone 4.0.11 and Firefox 23.0. I've also gone through the full troubleshooting checklist, as have other contributors, including pausing antivirus (which made no difference).

    (I get the same results with just the base URL without the "&search etc".)

    Adamsmith, I can't get a Report ID for this error - the option is greyed out. I enabled the debug option and submitted the debug output to the Zotero server: the debug id is: D150159874.

    Incidentally, I am also unable to save anything from the search results page - I get the folder icon in the address bar, but clicking on it throws up an error message. The debug id for for the search page error is: D744133460.

    I also got something in the Report ID menu item this time - Report ID: 2121905851.

    Still using Zotero 4.0.10 (Firefox, Standalone), Firefox 23.0 and Windows 7 (64 bit).

    Hope this helps a bit.
  • This may be fixed now. Update your translators via Preferences... -> General -> Update Now, restart Chrome (if using Chrome) and give it a shot.

  • Excellent! My problem with reviews does seem solved. Of course if a journal only titles the review "Review" without naming the book reviewed, that's all the Zotero translator can pick up (I assume), so I do have to manually tweak the entry if I want to include that in the citation. But that's not your problem. Thanks, aurimas (and Slackenerny, for the corroboration, and the precision of your incident descriptions).
  • The way this works now is that Zotero downloads the RIS file from JSTOR, if there is no title in the RIS file, it tries to find it on the page. If that fails, we just use "Review" as the title. So if you can see the full title on the page, but you're still getting only "Review" in the title, let us know and we'll try harder to find the real title.

    Of course there might be cases where JSTOR puts "Review" as the title in the RIS file, though I don't recall seeing anything like that yet.
  • Hi there, I'm having lots of problems with J STOR.

    I can no longer save the details for articles when I'm viewing them. the only way I can save a reference is if I go back to the search results. Also, the new beta search won't save at all, not even in search results. I'm using the latest firefox and Zotero software.

    I'm also having problems on the BL website but I'll post about this elsewhere.

    Can we expect Zotero to keep up to date with these sites? Or is this something we are expected to input as users? I'm surprised they don't work because they're MAJOR sites.... I can understand for other less well known things its an impossible task to keep up to date. But Jstor, BRitish library? these are the biggest.
  • This is my comment as a longtime Zotero user who is in no way involved with Zotero's management or programming.

    There are several things many users are unaware of that should be reinforced:

    Most site translator work is done by volunteers.

    Most broken translator problems are not recognized until they are announced by users here. An automated reporting system for broken translators exists but (to my knowledge) it doesn't rank problems by the importance of the source database.

    "Major" providers often do not announce that their systems will change; much less provide the details of how the changes will affect users who rely on the previous system configuration.

    Many translator problems do not affect all Zotero visitors to the "problem" sites but are related to individual user's computer configurations, their network and proxy settings, or similar issues.

    Over the past 2 years JSTOR has changed their policies concerning article metadata downloads at least three times. What was once available to everyone is now only available to those who connect from within an institution that has a subscription. The subscription requirement had only limited full text not metadata. The JSTOR system of testing for subscription can cause problems with some proxy systems.

    Sometimes I find myself frustrated and impatient that a site was working one day but broken today. The focus of that annoyance should seldom be Zotero but the data source that made the unannounced change. Perhaps, the frustration should instead be directed to those local tech folke who changed network configuration or security settings.
  • thanks for your swift response - I do realise that these issues were mainly caused by my own ignorance. I was guilty of falling into that 'I've paid for storage - why doesn't this just work' type of philosophy but I now see that this software is probably supported largely by volunteers rather than paid staff. It may be that the payment for storage is entirely unrelated to the development of this software. Also something I should look into no doubt.

    I have nearly finished my PhD but afterwards I'd be keen to be more closely involved in raising awareness of this software in my own institution. If the work isn't prohibitively difficult it would also be great to learn how to code translators so I can set up facilities to operate on some of the more obscure UK libraries/ research portals etc.

    Is it worth contacting yourselves if I find sites without translator support that might be valuable to add to the list?
  • While what DWL says is right in general, we do fix problems on major sites quickly, typically within hours (that's definitely true for the big databases like JSTOR, Proquest, Worldcat etc - library catalogs can take a little longer).

    But currently both JSTOR and the BL works (just tested), which suggests the problem is on your set-up. Run through the steps linked to by Aurimas.
  • and yes, we do take requests for new translators, so unless one of use is personally interested (for whatever reason) they may take quite a while until they're implemented. Please start a new thread for those or post them to https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/2814/5/which-site-translators-would-you-like-to-see-take-2/

    (and storage subscriptions do pay for development. Most of the development of the core client, syncing etc. is paid through that. Translators and citation styles are 95% volunteer work).
  • yes thanks I've now got this working by referring to those instructions - saving pdfs and everything... it's all about the login, that's the key.

    It's also good to know that the money for storage goes toward development. Thanks for all the good work you guys are doing. I'll definitely contact you after the deadline.
