Cannot complete syncing

Hello,

Report ID: 5879137

I've been having a trouble to sync Zotero since I emptied the trash about 1 week ago. I suspected that some items were merged and perhaps were in trash, then, these items are causing this sync problem?

I have over 700 items originally, but now have only over 400 items in the Zotero library. At least, I got a backup before this problem happens, so I am hoping that I could use this backup to restore some missing items. Is there anything that I could do to restore all lost items or use the backup?

Thanks,
Tamaki
  • What's the issue you're facing, exactly? From the error report it looks like you're hitting your file sync quota. There's a bug in 4.0.8 that causes the warning message for that not to appear, but the only effect of that would be that some attached files wouldn't be available on the server or on other computers. Zotero 4.0.9 will restore the warning message. You can check your file sync quota in your storage settings on the website.

Since this is a file sync error, all your data should continue to sync with the server, and this wouldn't be related to emptying the trash at all.

Is there another issue you're experiencing?
  • Thanks much, Dan, and sorry for this delayed thanks. Yes, I found myself hitting the file sync quota (because I uploaded a backup file, which created many duplicated items). But, I think I've solved the immediate problem I had been experiencing.

I found, however, that through accessing the Zotero through my new computer, I now cannot see the attached pdf files, i.e., Zotero shows the pdf file attached to an each item, but when I clicked on the pdf file, I see only blank (or black?) screen.

I am aware that this may be a different type of an issue and I should perhaps create a different thread. I will also look for a solution in the archived forum posts. But please let me know if you have any advice on what I can/should do. Thanks much.
  • Thanis Gracile -- I tried suggestions in that thread.

But, I couldn't completely follow it. First, my Firefox is version 22. I installed it this weekend, so this should be the latest version. But, the discussions in this thread seem talking about version 24?

I clicked and downloaded "PDF viewer" but kept getting an error message "Not available for Firefox 22.0."

I am still struggling with this problem. Could anybody help? Sorry, and please let me know if I should open a new thread.
  • The issue is not with Firefox but with pdf.js [actually Firefox embed a version of pdf.js which cause the issue described in the other thread].

You chose the "stable version" whereas you need the "Development version" of pdf.js
=> Download the "Development version" here: https://github.com/mozilla/pdf.js#browser-extensions
  • Thanks much, Gracile. This was very clear -- But, I kept getting another problem. I downloaded "development version" from the link you suggested (the file name is "pdf.js.xpi"), but couldn't open it by my computer (Macbook "there is no application to open the document").

I went through other sections (such as "Getting the Codes"), but sorry I couldn't figure out what to do with these instructions.

    Could you help me?
  • are you using Firefox to download the pdf.js.xpi file? If so, that shouldn't happen (Firefox should just install it) but if it does, just save it and drag it to Firefox (or open it with Firefox via File -->Open).
  • Thanks so much, Adamsmith. I realized I was using Chrome to download the file (as this is what I use to check e-mail, etc. and I just clicked the link.). I instead used Firefox, and yes, it worked! Now I can see a pdf file in the Zotero.

    Thank you both so much.
