An option to mark as read or unread a reference

Hi,

In our work is common to download one or more references to Zotero to review or read it or them later, because we are work on seeking references and not on read it for extract information.

This situation is no problem when we have few items, but when we have a lot of, we need to remember which one we read or not, and sometimes it is confuse. So, it is possible to add any icon or tiny graphical option to mark as read, unread, checked and check later the references.

Also, it is possible to give icons or any tiny graphical feature to differentiate types of notes (this feature could be a different color, also). For example, when I make a "quotation note" I usa a specific icon, or when I write and idea, the note is differentiates.

Finally, Before tehere was a plugin that allow integrate VUE with Zotero, but it does not work anymore, because the plugin is not updated. May be, you can develop an extension to use Zotero with Freeplane, VUE, or any other mindmapping software.

Ok. I won´t you with other requests, but I really hope that the excellent Zotero, include in the future this extensions.

Thanks

I hope you can take these idea.
  • I suggest you use tags to differentiate between read/unread and different types of notes.
Color coding of tags (think gmail) will almost certainly be introduced in Zotero 3.5.
  • With regard to unread articles, I leave everything unread in the "unfiled" folder, and move them somewhere meaningful after reading... Previously I used tags and "saved search".
  • Hi,

    I have the same suggestion/request !

Yes, we can make folder or using tags but the possibility, just by quick look, to see what is read and unread in the Library would be great ! Tags or specific folder just show you what is read, but what I expect is to see when I do research on my Zotero which relevant items are read or not...
Multi-Color coding of Library entry would be greatest !!!

By the way thank you for this amazing software !
    good luck

Probably you have something like this in mind

I would also like this feature, and share the same concerns.

    Hi,

Certainly the suggestion given by adamsmith is good and aplicable, but I insist by the following reasons:

    1. Tags are a classification tool made to organize references according to article contents, so I think that is not the better choice to use one classification system for two differents purposes.

    2. Also, use folder to separate unred from read references, its a good alternative, but in my case (and I think more people use similar process) I retrieve reference and classify every one according to specific subject (collection and subcollection) and even a reference could be stored at multiple folders, it could be confoused. Moreover, We can forget to cut the reference from the "unread folder".

    3. Finally, as NenB show in a figure how a graphical unread and annotations´ types classification system looks, we can infer that it is visually better and unified all requirements in one window.

I hope that Zotero developers add these features soon.

    Regards.
  • Actually, this could be automated by Zotero. I would guess that most users open a PDF by clicking on the Zotero item. There could be a flag indicating whether an item has been clicked or not, and display this in the user interface.
  • For future readers of the thread, and as previously noted in this forum,

I found the feature was released in version 4 of Zotero, and explained here:
