trouble downloading PDFs from specific publishers

I had posted in another thread but this is a different enough issue to be on its own.

When I try to collect citation data/pdfs from specific publishers, Zotero will scrape the citation no problem and grab a snapshot, but the PDF download gets a red X in the status window and doesn't download.

My problem is specifically with AIP:APL but looking through the discussions I noticed a few others as well had the same issue.
An example that doesn’t download a PDF:

Another thread (https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/28055/zotero-downloads-then-deletes-pdf/) showed two links, one worked, one didn’t. I had the opposite problem as far as which ones worked and which didn’t.

This downloads a pdf:
http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/jp310110r

This doesn’t:

I am using Zotero Standalone 4.0.8 with Zotero Connector 3.0.8.1 in Chrome Version 27.0.1453.110

Debug ID: D974559390

A couple other people in my office are having a similar problem (all three of us are using Zotero standalone with Chrome). Of the three above links to papers, 0/3 can get the first, 3/3 can get the second, and 1/3 of us was able to get the third.

Thanks!
  • and these are the URLs as you see them? Or is there a proxy in there?
  • These are as I see them. I am on campus.
  • I was having the same problem with ScienceDirect, JSTOR, and even Wiley Online Library. I am currently on a UC Campus and have a proxy server to connect to journal articles when I'm off campus. I found that when I turned off my proxy server I was able to download almost all the PDFs that I was having problems with. I still have one from JSTOR that won't work for some reason at this link:

    http://www.jstor.org/stable/3591109?&Search=yes&searchText=land&searchText=economics&searchText=recreation&searchText=private&list=hide&searchUri=%2Faction%2FdoBasicSearch%3FQuery%3Drecreation%2Beconomics%2Bprivate%2Bland%26filter%3Djid%253A10.2307%252Fj100791%26Search%3DSearch%26wc%3Don%26fc%3Doff%26globalSearch%3D%26sbbBox%3D%26sbjBox%3D%26sbpBox%3D&prevSearch=&item=1&ttl=73&returnArticleService=showFullText

Hope this helps. I'm not sure whether it will work well using my proxy next time I'm off campus. Will keep you posted.
  • are you sure you have access to the PDF through JSTOR? It's not part of the standard JSTOR package.

Sciencedirect, I believe, will generally not work when using Standalone via proxy, Wiley I'm not sure.
