zotero://select

I am trying to create hyperlinks from a word document to pdf files I have saved in Zotero.

zotero://select may be a way to do this.

Can anyone tell me how I can create a hyperlink from a word document to a file saved in Zotero standalone or my zotero library online?
  • I am also trying to do the same - have you made any progress on solving this problem.
  • no such luck
  • This is related. The drag/drop cites mentioned in the description are only available in MLZ at present.

  • See this thread.

I don't know if this will work from Word, but in general Zotero Standalone for Windows registers the zotero:// item handler protocol, so zotero://select links should work.
  • Hi I tried the above and no luck - could it be because I am running on a Mac? btw, I do not want to link to a citation, I want to use a hyperlink in a word or excel document from which other people in my group can click to download a PDF document which we have stored on Zotero Storage.
  • David - that's different. You can't currently create these URLs from the Zotero client, but you can right click the attachment online at zotero.org and "Copy link location" to get a URL that everyone with access to the citation (i.e. this would need to be a closed group) can use, including in Word. zotero://select is only relevant for the local client.
  • Thanks for your fast reply. Obviously I have tried "Copy link location" but after I copy the link into Word and then try to click on the word hyperlink, FireFox takes me back to the Zotero login screen,. Firefox works out that I am already logged in but does not take me to the relevant link location. Perhaps I need to change my Firefox preferences to allow this to happen?
  • works for me - how does such a url look for you?
Can you link to an item that's not an attachment?
  • If I copy link location the url looks as follows:

    https://www.zotero.org/groups/47598/items/ZEZHHEZT/file

If I am linking to an item that is not an attachment then I am just copying the url from the browser address bar and it looks as follows:

    https://www.zotero.org/groups/47598/items/collectionKey/96RUKB99/itemKey/37PGZW85

In either case, if I copy the link into work and click on it within word, it just takes me back to the zotero home page:

    https://www.zotero.org/
  • this should work and if anything sounds like a Works bug - someone with a Mac might be able to say more. E.g. if you click on the item URL in the post above it opens, correct? If that's the case, the link isn't passed on correctly by Works.
  • Actually it is Microsoft word... Same problem happens in MS excel.

But if I copy the link into Outlook, Numbers, a PDF, it seems to work...

where do I go to from here?
  • You could try to explicitly make this a hyperlink in Word rather than just copying it, maybe that helps, but not sure (it works in Libre Office e.g.).

Beyond that - maybe an Microsoft/Office support forum? This is clearly not a Zotero issue, since the link works from other programs.
  • Thanks but no luck there too.

It seems that when you click on the link from Word, it first tries to log me in and then is not able to complete the operation which is why it does not proceed with connecting all the way through to the desired page.

I will search out the Microsoft forums - wish me luck
  • (if you're not logged in/don't have permission to view an item you get an access denied from Zotero, not a redirect to zotero.org)
