In text citation stopped working.

I use both zotero standalone with chrome and safari extensions, as well as maintain my "original" zotero within firefox. I've been having a problem for a few months now where the in-text citation doesn't work. What do I mean by doesn't work?

I have no problem inserting the citations and building the bibliography. By all appearances, it works fine. However, once I quit zotero, the "links" appear to be broken. As in, if I go back into my document (Word document), and if I try to change or refresh the citations, zotero tells me that "This item no longer exists in your zotero database." And yes, I have gone through and re inserted every single citation in my document about 6 times. I've done it using the firefox version and the standalone version. And again, it seems to be working...until I close zotero and open it again. Then I have the same problem again and again and again.

What is going on here?

The first step is probably to confirm your exact environment. Things that might be relevant are: Operating system and version; Firefox version; Zotero version; Word processor plugin version (in Firefox); Standlone version; and the versions of the Chrome and Safari extensions that you have installed.

Sorry for all the questions, but the details may be important. I don't think we've seen anything like this before, so the chances of it being due to some peculiarity in your environment are pretty good.
  • Mac OS 10.7.5
    Zotero Standalone 3.0.8
    Zotero Firefox 3.0.11
Word for Mac 2011, Version 14.0.0
Chrome and Safari extensions...I don't know how to find the versions. But I'm not sure why that matters, I don't have any trouble getting the citations...and these are all citations I gathered using older firefox versions anyway. The zotero application is working fine, in every version I use. Its just not communicating with word properly.
I also don't know how to find the word plug-in version. I reinstalled it several times, so it should be the most recent version. But I'd be happy to find it. Its just not readily apparent.

In the meantime, I'm using Mendeley. Which seems to be working. And seems to be able to talk to my zotero database, which is useful. I hope we can figure out what's amiss with my zotero soon.
  • Try upgrading Standalone to the latest version (3.0.11).
  • That seemed to do the trick! Thanks!
  • Just before dawn is the darkest hour. :-)
