Loss of Document from Bibliography Edit

I have written a manuscript with over 300 references that is close to submission to a journal. However, when I change the citation style in 'document preferences' in word plugin on my Mac (from Chicago Manual of Style (author-date) to Nature), I lose the entire document. When I do the same in Word on my PC, I do not lose the document, but the references are in the wrong order and in the wrong place.
I need to fix this asap and would appreciate any advice.
