Firefox crashing on Mac with AFP network drive connection

We've been using Zotero for 2 years with our students, most of them saving data to their network storage drives for access from public computers as well as their personal computers. It's been working quite well until this summer when all of our students with Macs started having Firefox crash whenever they had Zotero pointing to their network drive connected over AFP. We found that it was solved by connecting via SMB but I see that this was also a problem back in an earlier version of Firefox. Any ideas if this is a permanent problem that we should create a work-around for or if there is a fix in the works? I can't imagine we are the only ones experiencing this.

Thanks,
Susan
  • This sounds like a Firefox issue. Can you create "debug output after restart" from the preferences window for this and post the debug ID here?

See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2313901&tstart=0 and the Bugzilla page linked to there.
  • I've submitted a couple of debugging logs but I fear they aren't picking up the crashing info prior to restart. Is there a way to capture that. Here are a couple of the Debug IDs

    D1038970593

I have submitted many of these to Mozilla through the crash reporter.

    Thanks,
    Susan
  • So by crash you mean an actual crash, where Firefox quits and there's a crash report to submit to Mozilla? If so, go to about:crashes in your address bar and provide a link to one of the Mozilla crash reports.

I assume you're using the latest version of Firefox 3.6?
  • But also, at what point is it actually crashing? Because Zotero appears to be starting up fine.
  • It consistently crashes when I'm closing Firefox but usually crashes after some random period of time 2-5 minutes of using Firefox. Here's a crash report:

    Thanks!
  • That's 3.6.3. Upgrade to 3.6.10.

There are exceptions, but in general we can't do anything about Firefox crashes.

Also, what version of OS X do you have? It's possible this is an OS X bug rather than a Firefox bug.
  • The crash is happening on many versions of Firefox and OS X. This current one is OS X 10.6.4 and Firefox 3.6.10 but it happens on lots of student computers with all combinations of versions. The only consistency is the data storage being connected via AFP. When it is a local drive, it's fine. Here's a crash report with most recent versions of all.

It's been reported to Mozilla via the crash report but should I add to the Bugzilla post as well?
  • Just FYI -- the bug on Bugzilla (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=542306) has been closed as presumed fixed; is this problem persisting for you?
