What does transparency of reference indicate ?

In the bibliographic list, occasionally a reference shows up in transparent text.

what does this signify ?

    you mean in Zotero itself, not in the word processor? that's usually as a result of a search, where the transparent item isn't actually a search result, but its parent item or one of its attachments is.
