  • You need Zotero installed in order to be able to "download" - i.e. use translators on sites - it sounds like you don't have that at work.
  • Ok thanks
next question is, at home I can see the icon but it wont import pdfs only a link to the website. I have checked the prefernec box to say always automatically attach pdfs but it doesnt work
  • Which site and which Zotero version? Are you sure that you have access to the full text pdf and if you use an institutional proxy to access resources, do you have proxy re-direction by Zotero enabled?
  • OK I have institutional proxy I guess: how do I enable proxy redirection? I am using Firefox 10.0.1 and zotero 3.0.1
  • It should be enabled by default - check in the Zotero preferences under "Proxies". Zotero should automatically re-direct you to the pages in question. E.g., if this is about JSTOR, clicking on
    http://www.jstor.org/stable/2095440
Zotero should automatically insert the proxy (so that the address looks something like http://www.jstor.org.ezproxy.myuniversity.edu/stable/2095440
It's also possibel this just doenst' currently work for the database you're looking at - we'd have to know which one that is.
  • adam, thanks. I cant find proxies in Zotero preferences. It has tabs for general, sync, search, export, cite, shortcuts and advanced but no proxies. Anyway I think the proxy system is working, when I search I get redirected through my university's website and I can access PDFs that way. I just can't download them. Is that typical when working offsite? Can I only download if I'm working at the university?
  • Are you using Zotero standalone? If so, you need to say so. If you say you're using Zotero and Firefox, I assume you're using the Firefox add-on. For standalone this is a known issue. It will be largely fixed in 3.0.2, due out in the next couple of days.
  • I am using the standalone 3.0.2. for Mac OS with a plug in for chrome
  • and you've tried again?
Try opening one pdf from JSTOR to accept their terms.
  • OK I downloaded zotero for firefox and am having some success ...a few sites download pdf but many still just download a snapshot
    For example this site: http://lj.uwpress.org.helicon.vuw.ac.nz/content/27/2/247
  • downloading from jstor works
do I just accept that there are some sites zotero wont download from?

in general yes - hovering over the translator icon can give you some clues. See 6. here http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
In this case you should be able to get a pdf - Zotero looks in the right place I believe.
I can't test this because I don't have access to the full text of the article, though.

edit: also, at least for typical websites like JSTOR, pdf download should work for standalone since version 3.0.2, which was released on Tuesday.
  • I looked at the troubleshooting forum
in the last one I tried, I hovered and just got a message saying save to zotero science direct, the url is http://www.sciencedirect.com.helicon.vuw.ac.nz/science/article/pii/S0926580599000254
I will continue to try to work through the troubleshooting page
  • I worked through the troubleshooting section
I just downloaded firefox and dont have any add ons
I exoect its the translator for specific sites, which is frustrating because hardly any of the sites in my academic discipline seem to work
If I down load and attach the pdfs manually, am I disabling any critical function when I do other things, like search for data etc?
  • In Firefox, if you paste this address in the URL bar:
    http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0926580599000254
are you automatically re-directed through your schools proxy?

No, there is no downside to manually downloading pdfs -
Automatic download should work in all of these cases, though. My link to the troubleshooting was specifically to 6. --> if you encounter any of the generic translators you should never expect a pdf. But JSTOR, Highwire 2.0 and Sciencedirect should automatically attach pdfs.
  • no I am not automatically directed there just to google scholar for everyone.
I looked at point 6 in detail
I would love to be able to automatically download from Science direct because it seems that a lot of useful articles are stored there
    hope you can help
  • In Firefox, open the Zotero preferences and go to the Proxy tab (third from a right). Either describe exactly what you see (which boxes are checked and what does it say in the window in the middle) or take a screenshot, upload it to a free image hosting site like imageshack.us and post a link to it here.
  • in zotero opened with firefox I cant find the preferences icon at all
In zotero standalone with firefox connector I open the preference icon and the third from the right is the cite button
In order from the left the tabs are: general, sync, search, export, cite, shortcuts, advanced
  • Yes, I know there is no proxy tab in standalone.
The Zotero preferences in FF are under the Gears menu, to the left of the green cross.
  • OK the proxies page says:
    tick for enable proxy redirection
tick for automatically recognize proxied sources
those are the only things ticked
The window in the middle has nothing in it at all
  • ah ok. So Zotero isn't automatically recognizing your proxy setting - which then also means it doesn't plug it automatically into the address it uses to get the pdfs. That would explain the problems.
Unless someone beats me to it, I'll tell you tomorrow how to manually add your proxy. (I'm actually surprised that Zotero doesn't catch it).
  • OK. Let's try this - may take one or two rounds back and forth before this is working correctly.
    1. Open the proxy tab in Zotero for FF
    2. Click on the plus below the empty window.
    3. In the new window that opens, check "Muti-Site"
    4. The window will change a little. Check the newly appearing "Automatically associate new hosts" box
    5. In the "Schema" box enter http://%h.helicon.vuw.ac.nz/%p
    6. In that same window, click on the plus under the box labeled "hostname" and type www.sciencedirect.com
    7. Here is an image of what the window should look like now
    http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/2595/screenshotat20120217144.png
    8. Click OK. Your proxy should now show up in the window that was blank before.
    9. Try this step again: In Firefox, if you paste this address in the URL bar:
    http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0926580599000254
are you automatically re-directed through your schools proxy?
  • I tried to download citation plus pdf after that exercise, but still only got the citation

    yay!
Now try grabbing the item with Zotero in Firefox again - you should get the pdf attached (make sure you do _not_ have Zotero standalone open).

    Also try the
    http://lj.uwpress.org.helicon.vuw.ac.nz/content/27/2/247
    again. Two things about that
    1. make sure your Zotero version is updated to 3.0.3 - there was a glitch that caused Highwire 2.0 translators to malfunction.
    2. Zotero should notify you that it has automatically associated the address with your proxy.
  • In fact its worse
I used to be able to download the pdf from
    http://www.tandfonline.com.helicon.vuw.ac.nz/doi/abs/10.1080/13534640500058434
but now only the snapshot downloads

    how about the others?
edit - nevermind then. didn't see your second post.
  • damn none of the urls work. I have firefox 3.0.2
The window in proxies was set up exactly as you suggested
  • I am going to restart the computer to see if that helps
