Highlight word or phrase after highlighting full sentence

Is there a way to highlight a word/phrase after highlighting a full sentence? Please don't suggest to highlight the word/phrase before highlighting the whole sentence because that is not always an option when reading and re-reading documents. Also, please don't suggest to delete the highlighted sentence in order to highlight the word/phrase first and re-highlight the sentence because sometimes I have comments attached to highlighted sentences.
