Zotero is alphabetizing my reference list using the wrong last name

I am using AMA style so my reference list needs to be alphabetized by last name. One of my citations is:

de Rooij A, van der Leeden M, Roorda LD, Dekker J. Predictors of outcome of multidisciplinary treatment in chronic widespread pain: an observational study. BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2013;13(1):133. doi:10.1186/1471-2474-14-133

The bibliography is alphabetizing this as if the author's last name is "Rooij' rather than "de Rooij." I have tried:

(1) re-importing the reference as .nbib from https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23577981/

(2) re-importing the reference as .ris from https://bmcmusculoskeletdisord.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1471-2474-14-133#citeas

(3) hand creating the reference in Zotero by adding a journal article and typing in the fields manually

After all 3 attempts above, the bibligraphy still categorizes the authors' last name as "Rooij" rather than "de Rooij."

Any troubleshooting tips? Thank you.

The way the author name is rendered is likely correct according to the style you have chosen. Author names with particles (in your case, 'de') may be 'dropping' or 'non-dropping'. The 'de' particle 'should' be dropped in an alphabetical list. Much discussed in this forum: Do a search of this forum with: "name particles" and "name particle" with the quotes and with separate searches plural and non-plural. It appears that the singular form search doesn't identify the plural.

Thank you for your feedback. I should have been specific that I am using the Journal of Pain citation style, and the editor has specifically asked me to have "de Rooij" listed as such rather than dropping the particle. If the citation style can be fixed to be "nondropping," that would be extremely helpful (and accurate to what the editor is asking for). Thank you!
