Capitalizing prefixes in surnames (Chicago Style)
I have a lot of references by Dutch authors with "van" and "van der" type prefixes in the surname. I want the prefix to be capitalized when the author is named without the first name (e.g. in short notes) but not when it follows the first name. Is there a way to do this?
Like this:
1. Mark van der Meer, 'Journal Article,' 53-60.
2. Van der Meer, 'Article', 54.
Thanks in advance!

It's more complicated than this. In Flanders, which is also Dutch speaking, the Van in family names is always with capital letters. "John Van Gelder" or "Van Gelder, John" would be spelled the same.
