Cannot change item type. Menu is missing

Hi. I am unable to add fields, change item type, etc.. because the menu is missing from the right hand column. (ie there is no menu saying info, notes, tags, related etc... I have just downloaded Zotero.

Most likely you have a PDF attachment and haven't actually created a parent item.
