To be clear, Zotero is free. Storage subscriptions are solely for file syncing between devices using Zotero servers, and there are free ways to do that as well.
There are no discounts for storage, but a huge proportion of Zotero users are students, and it's priced to be largely affordable (e.g., $1.67/month for the cheapest plan). Many institutions also offer unlimited storage for all members, so if you're at a university that doesn't, you can ask your library to consider it.
Thank you! Setting up webDAV is not trivial, using Zotero sync is better. So I am trying to upgrade the storage (I need more than a few hundred MB). It is true that Zotero is not very expensive. Just wish I can use S3 or Dropbox for the storage... This is not a complaint, I really appreciate the work you guys have done!
For the benefit of others, no, you just need to add your institutional email address to your existing Zotero account to benefit from institutional storage.
