No snapshot or PDF autosaved using Zotero connector on Safari

MacBook Air 2020 M1 with macOS 12.4
Safari 15.5 (17613.2.7.1.8)
Zotero 6.0.9

Problem:

I have been using Zotero on windows for a long time and it works fine.
Recently I got a MacBook, after configuration, I found it is embarrassing that

When I clicked the "save to Zotero button" on Safari browser, only the item itself was saved, but there is no snapshot, neither PDF file downloaded.
The snapshot is not a big deal, but for the PDF file I have to click the "find the available PDF" manually, which is kind of disappointing.

Is there anyway to fix this?
Thanks a lot.

  • Which URL(s) where you are expecting a PDF?
  • Thanks for your reply.
Basically, I have tested several URLs, which I have official subscription through university.
    For common seen publishers:
    ScienceDirect: Snapshot No PDF No
    Springer: Snapshot No PDF No
    Nature: Snapshot Yes PDF No
    Wiley: Snapshot Yes PDF No
But it is interesting, for some Chinese domestic journals, like
"电化学/Journal of Electrochemistry" by Xiamen University
    URL:http://electrochem.xmu.edu.cn/CN/10.13208/j.electrochem.211221
Zotero works fine, both of snapshot and PDF automatically downloaded
  • Can you provide an example URL from Nature you're saving from (as you see it in your browser — if you like, you can 'x' out your institution if it appears there) as well as a Debug ID from Zotero for a save attempt where the PDF isn't saved?
  • Here is a demo paper:
    URL: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-04813-y
title: Turbulent cold flows gave birth to the first quasars
    Debug ID: 1468038580
    Thank you so much!
  • That’s not a Debug ID. Follow my link for instructions.
  • Sorry for that
    Debug ID from Zotero is:D1596236276
Debug ID from Safari Zotero Connector is:D1829746035
  • Not sure if it will help, but can you install the Zotero beta and provide another Debug ID from that if the problem still occurs?

You can switch back to the release version after trying if you want — no need to stay on the beta if you don't want to.
  • This problem still occurs with Zotero beta
    Debug ID D161499225
I also tried it on my old windows laptop, there is no such problem.
  • Can you provide a Debug ID from the Windows laptop for it working?
  • Here is the Debug ID from Windows laptop:D1186844627
  • So unfortunately, due to technical limitations in Safari, the Zotero Connector for Safari just isn't able to save gated PDFs on as many sites as it can in other browsers — basically, sites that have more aggressive anti-bot measures. Hopefully this will improve in the future, but for now, for sites where this fails, you'd need to use Firefox, Chrome, or Edge.
