How to Export References with PDFs from Endnote > Zotero

Public Service Post-- I have only tested with EndNote 20.3

I originally followed the instructions here, but they are for Windows: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/endnote_import

On a Mac the EndNote .Data folder is in a Mac "package", rather than a folder so you cannot export into it in Endnote using their (crappy) dialog export window.

Solution: Export from EndNote with "Save filetype as:" XML, and "Export Style": EndNote Export (note that if you don't see EndNote Export as an option you may have to choose "Select Another Style" to add it to the list).

Save the resulting XML file anywhere. Then go to your .enlp Package, control-click and select "Show Package Contents". Now you should see your .Data folder and your .enl file. Manually move your XML export file inside the .Data folder. In there should be a PDF folder there, and maybe an sdb folder, so you will have three items in the .Data folder after adding the XML file.

Finally... you can do an import from Zotero and the better-built Zotero dialog window *will* let you into that .enlp package and then the .Data folder to select the XML file. Now, Zotero will be able to find all your EndNote PDFs so that they get imported properly.

Hope that helps someone.
  • Feel free to add some Mac-specific instructions to that wiki page. It seems the main thing is that you need to add directions for Show Package Contents to the find .Data folder step
  • (wiki accounts require manual confirmation, so it's probably easier for someone else to do for a one-off edit)
