Zotero causing multiple Mac programs to freeze

Whenever Zotero is running on my Mac (2017 macbook pro, OS Monterey 12.4) any program seems to freeze when it tries to access the finder. For example, when trying to download a pdf in Safari, safari hangs. Chrome also hangs when trying to download a pdf. Similarly, preview hangs when trying to save a file. This does not occur when Zotero is not running.

    It's not really possible for Zotero to cause other programs to freeze like that, and no one has ever reported anything like that. If that's really happening, it's some sort of strange bug in macOS that we've never heard of before. I would start by just restarting your computer.
