Upgrade StorageWhen does BetterBibTex change Citation Keys?

I'm currently writing a text with Zettlr, which is closely connected to Zotero. I have noticed that some of my citation keys changed, after I inserted them in Zettlr. This seems to occur only with citation keys of works that contain Umlauts somewhere. At some point, citation keys like @mullerTolleDemokratie1997 are changed to @muellerTolleDemokratie1997.
At which point does BBT (or Zotero?) change the citation keys? Is there a way to either switch this functionality off or apply it to all works so that there are no more changes while writing?
