PDF fingerprinting for syncing notes with Hypothesis?

Is there any internal tool for generating a fingerprint or unique ID for PDFs, which could be attached to annotations? That could also be used to see if there are annotations on the same PDF in other tools like Hypothesis.

Is this discussed somewhere already?

    The fingerprint is.a.component of.every PDF, no need to generate it.
    I don't quite understand the attaching to annotations part?
