How to safely replace attachment and preserve annotations

I have an entry in Zotero with many annotations. I've taken a copy of the PDF (without annotations) and removed some text watermarks. Is it possible to replace the attachment in Zotero with this unwatermarked PDF in a way where my existing annotations will still be valid and displayed correctly?

I tried simply replacing the PDF on the filesystem and that appeared to work, but was wondering if this is safe or if there's a better way?

    Yes, replacing the file on disk is correct. As long you haven't removed or reordered pages (the former of which can be done in the PDF reader itself in the current beta), this won't cause any problems in Zotero.
