Manually editing PDFs in bibliography--resets to 1?
I'm using MS Word 2007 and Firefox, the newest editions of zotero for both.
Zotero is storing copies of a bunch of pdf files that I'm citing in a paper. When I make the bibliography, it shows up fine and it lists all the file names I've cited, but when I go to manually edit the file names of the pdfs into the citation format that I want, it resets the number on each citation to "1." Someone has to have already had this problem but I've searched around and cannot find it. I'm using the American Medical Association citation style.
For example, at first it looks like this:
1. Filename1SmithA.pdf.
2. Filename2SmithB.pdf.
3. Filename3SmithC.pdf
Then, after I edit them manually, it becomes:
1. Smith A. Article 1, 2009.
1. Smith B. Article 2, 2009.
1. Smith C. Article 3, 2009.
I can write "2. Smith B...etc.," but then if I add another source before that one, it stays as #2.
If I edit the citation in the body of the text, then it gets rid of all the changes I made and reverts to:
1. Filename1SmithA.pdf.
2. Filename2SmithB.pdf.
3. Filename3SmithC.pdf.
How can I manually edit my pdf file names in the bibliography without the numbering doing strange things like this?

The easiest solution to this is to right-click on each PDF from within the Zotero library and select "Retrieve Metadata for PDF". If this doesn't work, make sure that you have installed pdftotext and pdfinfo (Gear icon -> Preferences -> Search), and try again.
If Retrieve Metadata doesn't work for you, you will need to create items for each source, by clicking on the (+) button in the Zotero panel, selecting the appropriate type, and filling in the bibliographic information. Then, drag the appropriate PDF onto each item.
I don't know what's causing the behavior you're seeing, but I'm fairly sure things will work much better if you are selecting actual Zotero items and not files.
As for an explanation: I believe what's going on is that you are breaking the Zotero field codes by manually adding stuff in. Thus Zotero doesn't know anymore that a given citation is number 1, 2, or 3 and starts from the beginning (i.e. 1) every time.
In any event, I will try this. Thanks for your help.
