Restore references sync to Zotero

Hi, I've created a Word file with reffernces, sent it for editing and when I got the file back the references now appeare like regular text, it is not in sync with Zotero. Is there a way to restore the conection between the document and Zotero? Not sure my question makes sense.. hoping someone will understand.
