Handling Citations When Merging (Combining) Multiple Google Docs Into One

I plan on writing most of the contents of my thesis on Google Docs as it is far easier for my supervisors to review the work. However, writing a lengthy piece of work with 40,000 words on a single Google Docs (or Word Doc) document seems problematic as the browser (or the word processor) crashes and lags.

It would be best to write most of the content on multiple separate Google Docs (e.g. each chapter will have a unique Google Doc) with Zotero Connector for reference management. However, managing (merging) references could be problematic when I have to merge multiple docs into a single doc at the end.

What would be the best way to handle citation when using multiple docs? - Should I use BibTex?

Alternatively, I have thought about transferring the content to Latex section by section as my work gets reviewed by the supervisors. Still, handling references is problematic.
  • Yes, definitely author in individual, smaller google docs. In the end, you can just copy all the documents together, that's also the recommendation for working with long documents in Word or LibreOffice
