Cannot delete Zotero to reset Safari extension

My Safari extension for Zotero stopped working (it does not appear as an option anymore as something I can use). I can't delete Zotero to redownload it. It says it cannot delete Zotero as extensions are in use. When I go to my Safari extension manager, Zotero appears there, but I can't delete it from there as it tells me I need to delete the app. But I can't delete the app! Any thoughts on what's going on?

    Did you try restarting your Mac? Does Zotero extension appear in Safari then? If not, can you delete Zotero from Applications after a restart? What if you don't even launch Safari after restarting?
