Updating and syncing

I have access to my professor's Zotero library on my account (or I choose his profile when I open Zotero, which I suppose is me signing into his profile?). Now it says the version of Zotero I'm using is too old to sync, does this mean that when I add items to his library they don't show up in his library on his devices? How can I update Zotero without losing access to his library? And more generally, does one have to do back ups of PDFs when one updates Zotero?

You can just update Zotero: it'll remember both profile settings and data folders (though, generally speaking, you should always have updates of important data)

Ok! What's the best way to update? Downloading a new version or something else?
