Second author is appearing in in-text citation

I am using APA 6th referencing, which uses the (First Author et al., Year) citation style when there are many authors.

I have one citation which is being cited as (First Author, Second Author, et al., Year): i.e., (Lim, Laidsaar-Powell, et al., 2022)

I suspect it might be because I have two references by Lim et al. in 2022, and it might be adding the second author (Laidsaar-Powell) to distinguish the citations. However, the other Lim 2022 paper has the in-text citation of (Lim, He, Shaw, & Dhillon, 2022) since it is less than 6 authors long.

Also, as per APA 6th referencing guide, multiple works by the same author in the same year usually get denoted with a, b, c, etc. after the year (i.e., 2022a and 2022b).

Can you please help me to fix this?
  • The current behavior of the style is correct.
On second citation, Lim, He, Shaw & Dhillon would become Lim et al. 2022, i.e. indistinguishable from the other citation.
APA explicitly does not want you to use Lim et al. 2022a, b for two different author groups and instead requires adding additional authors in text before the et al. So what you're seeing is correct APA style.
  • Okay thanks for clarifying @adamsmith , I didn't realise that!
