Insert Zotero citations into a Matlab live script

I'm using Matlab's Live Editor to generate the Methods sections of several of my papers. I've been exporing those outputs as Word documents and adding the necessary citations there, with the Zotero add-on. But it would be really good if Zotero could be integrated within Matlab Live Editor, so as to directly add there citations from my library, and maybe also a bibliography.

I know this exists for R notebooks, which I imagine is linked to R being open-source, and Matlab not... Are there any plans at all to similarly support Matlab notebooks (Live Editor)?

    RStudio integration was written by RStudio with, afaik, virtually no input from Zotero -- some of us provided feedback on the beta, but purely as private users, not in any Zotero capacity.
    With *Zotero* being open source, Matlab could do the same.
