"Checking Off" Items in a Collection

New zotero user. Perhaps I'm just missing it, but is there a way to "check off" items in my collection? As I work on research, I'll find a collection of articles, and as I use them in my lit review, I want to annotate that I've included the item in my paper. Is there a way to highlight, check off, or otherwise note used items? The only thing I've found that might work is tags. Has anyone come up with a good system?
  • Make a tag with the ✔️ Emoji as the tag text, then make that a colored tag (right click and choose Assign color)

I have used tags with colors "!2R" (to read) and "Read".
  • That is perfect! Thank you!
  • Is there a way to do this in "My Library" where I can have a column and quickly see it?
  • bwiernik's advice applies and emoji tags are visible in the center oanel
  • Okay, I cannot get it to work. I have tried an emoji checkmark, the word, "read," and I do not see a column with either. I tried to add a column called "Extra" and could not maipulate it. What am I doing wrong?

    Select any item
Add ✔️ as a tag to the item (right panel)
✔️ will be visible to the left of the title, in the central panel
Edit: Great resource shared by adamsmith below
  • Scroll down (or search for emoji) on this page for details https://guides.library.unlv.edu/CitationManagerShowdown/zotero
  • Argh, but then how do you add the tag? I can name a tag "✔️Read,” and the “✔️” shows up nicely, but then when I add a tag and type “read,” it doesn’t come up as a suggestion!
  • Aha! The fix is easy: Add the emoji to the *end* of the tag, not the beginning. Search then works just fine, and so does the emoji-detection
