Newbie question: Zotero 6 + iPad app sync

Hello!
I'm considering leaving my current ref manager (bookends) and use zotero basically because, after playing for a while, it seems it has better pdf annotation capabilities and very easy export options to .md files (obsidian).
I have a very huge collection of pdfs (20+ gb). What I don't understand is if paid storage is the only solution to have my pdf in sync and usable from the iPad and back to mac. What I did is setting up sync on my mac and the pdfs that are store in zotero space are visible and usable on the iPad; then installed zotfile and set up a dropbox folder. What I see is that from iPad I can see only the pdf stored in zotero storage and not the pdf in the dropbox folder i set up. So apparently there's no way to have everything in sync if you don't use zotero storage folder, is it correct? As I have a very huge collection storing in zotero would be quite expensive. Am I doing something wrong or is there any workaround to have pdf in sync between mac and iPad? I searched the forum and documentation but didn't come up with clearer ideas, thanks a lot

  • You can use Zotero storage or WebDAV by any third party provider to sync with your iPad, but you can't use PDFs linked by ZotFile and stored&synced through Dropbox, no, so what you're seeing is expected.
I'm not aware of a workaround that'd allow you to access the PDFs in the iOS app, no.
  • Ok, thanks Adam! That's what I guessed but just to be sure
