"Read Aloud" in Word skips chunks with Zotero citations

I like to use the Read Aloud feature of Word to review my writing, but it does not interact well with my Zotero citations. Read Aloud will read the start of a paragraph, but skip the rest of the paragraph as soon as it encounters a sentence with a Zotero citation. If I copy and paste (using "Keep text only") the content of the Word document to a new document, such that there are no actual Zotero citations in this new document but the text of the citation remains, then Read Aloud functions properly.

Has anyone had luck with using Read Aloud in a Word document with Zotero citations?
